Ex-church secretary jailed in Cumberland County embezzlement case

| May 18, 2010

A Cumberland County judge today sentenced former church secretary Jane Poth, 51, of Newville, to 3 to 23 months in county prison and ordered her to pay more than $60,000 in restitution for stealing from the Mount Holly Springs United Methodist Church.

Public Defender Timothy Clawges said Poth already has paid more than $25,000 in restitution. Judge Edward E. Guido said that saved her from a longer prison term.

State police said Poth stole the money from the 300-member church's emergency fund for the needy and from an office account between 2001 and 2008. She was arrested last summer and pleaded guilty in March to theft by unlawful taking.
