Ex-church volunteer who admitted sex crimes against kids a high risk to reoffend, psychiatrist testifies

| May 14, 2013

A former church youth volunteer, who admitted to sexually molesting and making child pornography of young boys, must take extensive counselling for such issues as social skills and sexual deviancy or he will remain a high risk to similarly reoffend, a forensic psychiatrist testified on Wednesday.

Dr. David Tano, who completed a risk assessment on Roderick Kyle Janssen for his long-term offender hearing, said the man has difficulty accepting responsibility for his actions, especially in the area of desire for having sex with young boys.

“He blames others and the environment, and even blames one victim for coming back to his house after he told him to stay away,” Tano told Crown prosecutor Nadine Nesbitt. “He also blames parents for lack of affect.

“My opinion at the moment of assessment, taking into account all risk factors, is that Mr. Janssen — if nothing changes — is a high risk to reoffend.”

Janssen pleaded guilty in November 2011 to 18 charges involving sexual abuse of a half-dozen boys in his church group and possession of massive amounts of disturbing child pornography: 78,841 images and 3,374 videos.
