Ex-deacon accused of theft from Cresskill church

CRESSKILL — A former deacon and pastoral associate at St. Therese Lisieux Church has been charged with stealing $53,000 from the church to pay his credit card bill and buy airline tickets, authorities said.

Investigators arrested James Looby, 51, of Texas, on Wednesday on two counts of theft, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said.

Looby resigned from his position of pastoral associate in May 2010 and moved to Del Valle, Texas. A routine audit by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark’s Internal Auditing Department two months later revealed that Looby took $53,000 from a church bank account designated for parishioners in need, Molinelli said in a statement.
