FBI investigates church theft

| June 17, 2012

The FBI continues to investigate a case in which computer hackers broke into a St. Clair church’s bank account, removing a “substantial amount” of money.

Ron Loch, the supervisory senior resident agent with the Macomb County Resident Agency for the FBI, said the bureau is completing a forensic investigation into the hard drive of the computer that was hacked. The process will extract information from the computer’s hard drive.

The agency plans to move forward once that information is available, but Loch could not give a date on when that would be.

The FBI began an investigation March 15 after funds came up missing from a bank account held by Immanuel Lutheran, 415 North Ninth St. in St. Clair. St. Clair Police Chief Rick Jefferson said a “substantial” amount of money was taken from the church’s account with Seaway Community Bank.
