Federal judge says man accused of killing NM nun competent to stand trial

| June 2, 2011

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A man accused of beating a nun to death with a flashlight on the Navajo Indian reservation in northwestern New Mexico is competent to stand trial, a federal judge ruled Wednesday.

The ruling came after a nearly daylong hearing in Albuquerque during which prosecutors presented mental health experts who testified that Reehahlio Carroll may have lied about having hallucinations and purposely performed badly on cognitive tests.

"It's my opinion that he's competent to proceed" to trial, said Dr. Lea Ann Preston Baecht.
