Fire crews attend ‘vicious’ fire at church

| December 21, 2009

A BLAZE at St Andrew's Church, Orford, required four crews to put it out on Sunday at 4.10 am.

Police are investigating the blaze which they have called 'a vicious attack'.

They damaged furniture and decorations and a nativity scene.

Detectives say in a "final, mindless act of violence" the vestry of the church was set on fire. It was put out quickly before the blaze could spread.

Two crews were initially sent before another two were called to contain the fire to a storage area of the Poplars Avenue church.

A small salvage operation was carried out following instructions from the vicar.

Police are linking the attack to vandalism on cars outside which saw aerials being bent.

Anyone with any information can call police on 0845 4580000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
