Firebug fears as churches burn

| June 5, 2011

Church groups are worried that a firebug is targeting places of worship after a string of damaging fires across Wellington.

Fire crews dealt with seven fires, from Saturday evening till last night. Multiple investigations have been launched by emergency services staff searching for links between the fires.

Five churches were targeted by suspected arsons – Porirua's Gospel Chapel, Wainuiomata's Gospel Chapel, the historic St Alban's Church at Pauatahanui Inlet, a Karori Cemetery chapel, and the Wainuiomata Pioneer Church.

There were also fires at Tony's Tyre Service in Porirua, and the Seatoun Scout Hall. Both buildings were badly damaged.
