Former Birch Run church leader pleads to embezzling more than $100K from church

SAGINAW — Robert G. Mathis, the former congregation president at Christ Lutheran Church in Birch Run, could spend at least five to six years in prison for embezzling more than $100,000 from the church.

On Wednesday, the day his trial was to begin, Mathis, 65, pleaded guilty as charged to conducting a continuing criminal enterprise, embezzling more than $100,000, third-degree money laundering and three counts of forgery.
