Former bookkeeper at Visalia church sentenced to prison

| October 29, 2011

A church bookkeeper who stole more than $2 million from collection plates has been sentenced to 11 years in prison and ordered to pay nearly $2.2 million to her former employer, First Assembly of God Church in Visalia, according to the District Attorney 's Office.

A church audit in early 2009 led to the discovery that Sandra Arreola of Visalia had altered her pay without authorization, giving herself a higher pay. Further audit revealed Arreola, 51, had also taken money from church offerings and altered bank deposit slips to hide the thefts between 2002 and 2008. By the time her actions were discovered, she had taken more than $2.1 million.

Arreola pleaded guilty earlier this month to 13 counts of felony embezzlement and money laundering with special allegations.
