Former church employee faces new fraud charges

The Watauga County Sheriff's Office has filed additional charges against a former church employee accused of embezzling approximately $166,000 over a matter of years.

On Jan. 3, Deerfield United Methodist Church reported a possible misappropriation of funds, alleging that approximately $48,000 had been misused by a former employee, according to the sheriff's office.

On Monday, officers arrested Treva J. Jones, 44, of 4090 Jakes Mountain Road, Boone, and charged her with six counts of felony obtaining property by false pretense, six counts of felony forgery and six counts of felony uttering a forged instrument, according to the sheriff's office.

She was issued a $25,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court March 26.
