Former Coronation Street star’s granddaughter caught stealing from church

| September 17, 2011

THE heroin addict granddaughter of a former Coronation Street star has avoided prison after stealing from two Cobham churches.

Emma Beach, 23, admitted helping her mother Karen Briggs, 43 – the daughter of Johnny Briggs, who played Mike Baldwin in the TV show until 2006 – carry out the crimes.

Karen Briggs is already serving a nine-month jail term for the two offences after being sentenced at Redhill Magistrates' Court last month. Her daughter received an 18-month community order for each offence, as well as a six-month drug treatment order, a curfew and a £300 compensation requirement.

Magistrate David Newman said the crimes were "serious and mean offences".
