Former Garnerville pastor Kreiser accused of $25G theft from parish

| April 1, 2011

GARNERVILLE — The former pastor of St. Gregory Barbarigo was charged Friday in the theft of more than $25,000 from the parish.

The Rev. Thomas Kreiser, 45, is charged with one count of third-degree grand larceny, a felony. He is accused of using the church's American Express card for personal expenses, including online gambling, Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe said.

The thefts occurred from March to June 2010.

"This defendant, a Roman Catholic priest, embezzled thousands of dollars from St. Gregory's Church and improperly used the money for his personal benefit," Zugibe said in a statement. "His conduct represents a betrayal of the trust of his parishioners who looked to him for moral leadership and spiritual guidance."|head
