Former Mt. Holly church secretary ordered to court

| September 11, 2009

A former church secretary accused of stealing more than $35,000 from her congregation was automatically ordered to court Wednesday after she waived her right to a preliminary hearing.

Jane Marie Poth, 50, of the 400 block of Shippensburg Road, Newville, sat quietly in Magisterial District Judge Susan Day’s busy office for almost an hour before making the waiver. She did not comment afterward.

Poth faces three charges of theft — one by unlawful taking, one by deception and one by failing to make a required disposition of funds. She remains free on $10,000 bail.

Arrest papers filed by state police at Carlisle say Poth stole the money from Mt. Holly Springs United Methodist Church’s emergency help fund and an office supplies account between October 2001 and October 2008.

Church leaders have said Poth is no longer the church secretary. Jerry Wolgemuth, communications director of the Central Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church, said the church has financial safeguards, including regular audits, in place.
