| July 21, 2010

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — A former Upstate pastor who escaped custody in May while serving time for setting his church on fire was arrested in Asheville.

Christopher Patrick Daniels was arrested Tuesday on a second-degree trespass charge at an office trailer on Lyman Avenue belonging to Asheville Metal and Recycling.

Pickens County authorities had issued a warrant for Daniels in May when he was charged with escape from prison. The state department of corrections said Daniels walked away from his work assignment May 4 at the Pickens County Landfill.

Daniels was serving a 15 year sentence for arson. Daniels was arrested in 2009 for starting a fire at the Blue Ridge Baptist Church in Belton where he was the pastor.

Daniel faces an additional one to 15 years if convicted in the escape. A Buncombe County magistrate set Daniels' bond at $50,000.
