Former St. Isidore Staffer Pleads Not Guilty in Embezzlement Case

| May 12, 2011

A former St. Isidore employee pleaded not guilty Thursday morning to five felony embezzlement charges alleging the theft of about $220,000 from the church.

Kathleen Dake, 58, of Blackhawk is being held on $433,000 bail in Martinez. She will next appear at the Martinez courthouse on June 23 to set a date for a preliminary hearing.

Also charged in the case are former St. Isidore employee Virgilio Lukban and volunteer Evelyn Peinado, who police said are charged with taking about $360,000 from the church through fraudulent use of credit cards.

Dake appeared in a Martinez courtroom Thursday, wearing an orange inmate jumpsuit, and spoke briefly to her attorney from behind the courtroom barrier.
