GARDENDALE, AL (WBRC) – A Georgia man was arrested Friday in connection with a fire that damaged the new Gardendale First Baptist Church.

Authorities said Friday they had charged Donny Ray Horton, 46, of Hoschton, Ga., with arson and criminal mischief. At about 2 a.m. Friday, authorities said Horton set fire to a set of windows, a wall, and the floor of the church's new sanctuary.

Authorities said a passerby saw the flames and alerted police. The first officer on the scene was able to extinguish the fire and was later heading to another call when he saw Horton down the road. He pulled over to question him and later determined him to be the suspect.

The church's website said Friday police have said Horton may work for the company installing seats in the new worship center.

Fire officials said Friday's fire is the second fire set at the church's construction site this month. The first one happened Easter weekend. No suspects have been arrested in that case.
