Gesu Catholic Church reports funds missing to FBI

| August 28, 2011

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – Gesu Catholic Church on Parkside Blvd. contacted the FBI in Cleveland last week after the parish discovered money missing from one of its accounts. They've also been in touch with Fifth Third Bank, which handles its accounts.

Diocese Spokesperson Sally Oberski said she doesn't know how much is missing.

On the first day of school at Gesu this is tough news for parishioners to digest.

Paul Syring is coach of the Gesu Greyhounds, the 5th and 6th grade football team. He's also a lifelong member of Gesu Catholic Church.

"Somewhat surprised to hear it. It's the first time I've heard it," Syring said. "So I am going to keep my eyes and ears open and my mind open and am anxious to hear what the diocese has to say, what the pastor has to say and I hope it's good news and not as bad as it may appear at first impression."

Carol DuPuis says Gesu Church and School are known for honesty and loyalty. She says the parish did the right thing in reporting the missing money to the FBI.
