Girl arrested in disturbance at church

BRIDGETON — State troopers arrested a juvenile while helping city police disperse a large, unruly crowd at a church on New Year's Day.

Troopers from the Bridgeton barracks responded to Union Baptist Temple on South Pine Street about 3 a.m. Jan. 1.

Several hundred people reportedly were gathered for an event, and there also was a report of shots fired, state police Sgt. Gary Catts said.

As Bridgeton police were arresting a juvenile female, another girl allegedly tried to obstruct the arrest.

She was ordered to leave, but refused and made an "aggressive move" at troopers, Catts said.

After she was handcuffed, the second girl kicked at a trooper inside a patrol car and tried to kick out the windows of the vehicle, Catts said.

The girl was processed and released to a guardian.

State police did not make the incident public until Thursday.
