Grand jury considering evidence in church arson case

| May 15, 2010

TYLER, TX (KLTV) – The prosecution presented its case in the East Texas church arson case. Now, all that is left is the official decision from a Smith County grand jury.

Jason Bourque and Daniel McAllister are accused of setting fire to Dover Baptist Church in February.

But, the two young men may soon be connected to even more fires.

"Would we go around burning buildings down, much less, a church?" asked Emily, a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist. "They were victims of, certainly, criminal thinking…and we want them brought to justice, but we want them regenerated and forgiven."

The church burned back in January. Authorities say arsonists started the blaze.

Jason Bourque and Daniel McAllister were eventually named as suspects.

Ten churches were destroyed, earlier this year. But, so far authorities have only accused the two of burning one church; Dover Baptist.

Sources say the grand jury heard evidence from that investigation. Things wrapped up around 9 p.m., Thursday night. We are told the grand jury considered evidence from First Church of Christ, Scientist, Tyland Baptist Church, Fellowship of Prairie Creek in Lindale and Clear Spring Baptist Church. All those churches are in Smith County.

"It makes the church feel good that they're actually doing their job that they're supposed to be doing," said Clear Spring pastor, Brandon Owens.

He says his congregation is weeks from moving into their new building.

"That was the first thing that we had to do, was forgive these guys, but I stand on justice," he said.

And, he is confident justice will be served.

A judge will have to accept the grand jury's decision before it officially comes down.
