Guilty: Verdict reached in 2004 killing in Goldenrod Road church

| February 3, 2011

A jury found Rafael Florian guilty of first-degree murder Thursday in the 2004 suffocating and stabbing death of Margarita Hidalgo inside a church on Goldenrod Road.

After hearing from the slain woman's family and their requests for justice, Orange Circuit Judge C. Jeffery Arnold sentenced Florian to life for the murder, telling him, "May God have mercy on your soul."

Florian said nothing about the case or his fate and expressed no outward emotion after hearing the verdict and his sentence. As he was escorted from the courtroom in handcuffs, one Hidalgo family member shouted, "Justice was served, Florian!"

Florian had burglarized Iglesia Adventista del Septimo Dia on Goldenrod Road early March 30, 2004, when he was spotted by Margarita Hidalgo, 51, a church member who worked mornings cleaning the church.,0,5576381.story
