MARGAO: Cash between 2,000 and 5,000 was stolen from the money box inside Holy Spirit Church, Margao, on Wednesday night.

Margao police have registered a theft case against unknown culprits.

Parish priest, Fr Francisco Avinash Rebello, told TOI, "The sacristan went to the chapel at 5.45am and saw that the main altar and the tabernacle had been tampered with. He informed me around 6am. I rushed to the church and saw that the burglar had tried unsucessfuly to open the tabernacle. Parts of it-the lock, wooden door and metal handle-were broken."

Pointing out that the burglar may have come only for the cash, Rebello said, "Neither the silver nor statutes in the church were touched. The thief must have mistaken the tabernacle for a safe."
