HPD: Man’s suicide ends standoff at church

| December 5, 2009

Houston police found a man who barricaded himself at an east Houston church dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Saturday afternoon.

SWAT officers found the 50-year-old, whose identity has not been released, in an upstairs room at Market Street Baptist Church, in the 12900 block of Market Street Road, at about 3:40 p.m., said Houston Police Department spokesman Kese Smith.

Police were called to the church after the man and his estranged wife got in an argument around 9:40 a.m., police said.

The wife managed to get away unhurt but the man and police exchanged gunfire and he retreated back into the church, authorities said. They called his cell phone and tried using loudspeakers to coax him out, but he never responded. The couple was separated for four months after 17 years of marriage. The wife told police that the man was intoxicated and using painkillers.
