Human Remains Burned Inside Church’s Grave

| October 25, 2011

HONOLULU — Bill Ha'ole arrived at Kawaiaha'o Church on October 10th to upsetting news. Ha'ole said someone set fire to human remains exhumed from the church cemetery.

“This particular act is a vicious attack not just on the church, not just on the iwi (bones) but also to the culture beliefs of both of our people Hawaiian and Christian so it hurts,” said Ha’ole.

The church is currently building a multipurpose center. Archeologists digging uncovered the remains in a grave.

“Our whole objective here at Kawaiahao Church, if there are any burial remains, we like to move them away to some place safer, rather than keep them in harm’s way,” Ha’ole said.

Ha'ole said the remains were protected with paper cushion and plywood, which the suspect or suspects used to start the fire. Church security said they didn't witness the incident. The church has since increased surveillance of the grave site.

Church officials believe the suspect first jumped a fence before entering the secured construction site by digging a hole under a second chain-linked fence.
