Identities of couple killed in church known, but not motive

| January 13, 2012

Whatever happened in the lead-up to the final, violent moments of Zeferina Castillo, 54, and Manuel Rodriguez, 51, near the altar of a church in Helotes remains a puzzle to authorities.

They visited Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church on Wednesday afternoon and were found dead after shots rang out.

Police determined Rodriguez killed Castillo, then himself. But investigators Thursday had learned little about the couple and still were trying to piece together basic information about what might have motivated him.

“All we know is they were involved, apparently for a while,” Helotes police Lt. Anthony Burgess said. “And what ‘a while' is, I can't really define that.”

Castillo was the president and owner of Castillo Mission Funeral Home on San Antonio's South Side.

Investigators determined Rodriguez, who also was from San Antonio, shot Castillo several times in the upper torso before he turned the gun on himself and fired a single shot to his head.

Witnesses at the church said the pair were well dressed and composed when they walked in together, apparently after arriving in separate vehicles, Burgess said.
