Indiana man gets 9 years in prison for church break-in

| July 31, 2010

A Merrillville, Ind., man was sentenced to nine years in prison today for the 2009 burglary of a church, according to the Lake County, Ind. Prosecutors Office.

Edward Paul Rock, 45, broke a window at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Crown Point in December 2009 and entered the building, according to a news release. Rock then smashed pictures, vases, water pitchers, a coffee pot and a mirror, causing an unknown amount of damage. He also took a laptop from the office and put it on top of a trash can.

Rock ran away when a pastor found him in a church pew, and police eventually found him crouched behind a door next to the church. No one was injured in the incident.

Rock had previously been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and pled guilty but mentally ill to the charge on June 25. Rock began serving his sentence today, prosecutor's office spokeswoman Diane Poulton said.
