CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – A judge set bond at $1 million on a single weapons charge against the suspect in a shooting at a downtown Charleston church, but bond was automatically denied on nine murder charges.
Dylann Roof, 21, appeared in bond court at 2:15 p.m. Friday.
Relatives and family representatives of the nine people attended the hearing and several relatives spoke to the court during the hearing.
Several relatives said they forgave Roof for what he had done. A family member of Tywanza Sanders even invited Roof to a bible study on Sunday.
Roof did not appear to show any emotion as he listened to the victims' families. He appeared before Judge Skip Gosnell, a magistrate judge. Only a circuit court judge can set bond on murder charges.
