Kapiti parishioner jailed for setting fire to church

| May 16, 2011

A mentally ill woman, who had been welcomed and helped by the congregation of St Andrew's Anglican church in Plimmerton, set a fire in the church, destroying the roof and causing more than $380,000 of damage.

Amy Marie Bircham, 29, had gone to the Steyne Ave church in 2009 after church members helped her out when they found she was living in her van. She took part in church activities and made friends.

But she began to believe she was being talked about behind her back and that others did not like her. She broke into the church on February 26 last year and set fire to papers and other objects in the vestry.
