Kidnapping of Mount Pleasant teen tops 2013 story list

| January 2, 2014

Each year brings its own set of victories and tragedies. 2013 was no different. From a teen kidnapped from a church parking lot to the destruction of the railroad depot, local readers viewed an active news year.

The Daily Tribune staff selected the Tlop 10 stories, choosing the kidnapping of Ruby Zavala on May 5 as the top news story of 2013.

Twenty-six hours of terror came to an end Monday afternoon as a young man who abducted a 7th grader from a church parking lot at knifepoint meekly surrendered to sheriff’s deputies without putting up a fight.

Jesus Ramirez, 22, who already had 12 visits to the county jail in the past six years – most recently for sexual assault in March – is now in the Titus County Jail for the 13th time.

The assault and kidnapping which made national headlines began Sunday at 1 p.m. when the obsessed Ramirez – who was released only a week earlier from the Terrell state mental hospital – confronted 14-year old Ruby Zavala, her mother, Maria, and three-year old sister, in the parking lot of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and kidnapped them at knifepoint.

Ramirez, 22, who made national headlines with an assault and kidnapping in May, pled guilty to five charges on Oct. 17 and received five 20-year sentences.
