Lawrence Cermak charged with stealing from a local Catholic Church

Lawrence J. Cermak was charged with one count of theft, which is a third degree felony and carries a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison for stealing approximately $330,000 from Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Lawrence Cermak, 59, of Garfield Heights, was hired in July 2002 as a bookkeeper for the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic church. A customary mandatory audit was done of the parish’s finances due to a recent change in pastor. During the audit numerous discrepancies were discovered that spanned from October 2003 through May 2009. The audit revealed that 69 checks totaling approximately $330,000 in parish funds had been misappropriated during the time Lawrence Cermak was bookkeeper.

Lawrence J. Cermak’s arraignment is scheduled for October 16, 2009 at 8:30 am.
