ANNA, IL (KFVS) – The man police say beat two women at an Anna church entered a not guilty plea to the charges against him Tuesday.

Willis Bates faces two counts of attempted murder, two counts of felony theft and one county of burglary.

He'll be back in court in Union County on December 8th.

According to court documents, Bates allegedly committed those crimes at the Anna First Baptist Church at the end of September. He allegedly severely beat and kicked the bodies and heads of Leona Mount and Mary Shepard.

Court papers also allege Bates took money from both Shepard and the church.

Another man, 23-year-old Jared Lee Garver, is accused of helping Bates hide from police.
