Man accused of punching, stabbing Tacoma pastor

Pierce County prosecutors on Monday charged a 28-year-old man with first-degree assault for allegedly stabbing his pastor with a piece of sheet metal.

A not-guilty plea was entered on behalf of Ivan Zaytsev at his arraignment in Superior Court. Court Commissioner Meagan Foley ordered Zaytsev jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Tacoma police said Zaytsev attacked the Rev. Peter Sayenko of the Slavic Christian Center on Tuesday night as the men talked in the pastor’s church office.

Sayenko told investigators he was conducting services when Zaytsev showed up at the church and demanded to see him. Zaytsev was swearing and talking about his wife, Sayenko said.

The pastor had performed the couple’s marriage ceremony, court records show.

Sayenko led Zaytsev into the pastor’s office, where the younger man continued to rant, the records show.

At one point, the pastor feared for his safety and picked up a phone to dial 911. It was then, Sayenko said, that Zaytsev punched him in the face and then stabbed him in the back, the records show.
