Man admits stealing wine from Hyde Park church

A Hyde Park man admitted in court today he broke into a church in the town to steal Communion wine.

Andrew Irvin, 20, of The Ledges apartment complex, entered a guilty plea in Dutchess County Court to third-degree burglary, a felony.

Irvin told Judge Gerald V. Hayes he broke a window at St. James Episcopal Church on Route 9 on the night of Feb. 17, entered the church and stole the wine.

Under a plea agreement, Irvin will undergo treatment for drug and alcohol abuse. If he successfully completes the treatment, he will be permitted to plead instead to a misdemeanor and serve three years on probation.

Hayes warned Irvin that if he failed to finish the rehabilitation program he would consider sentencing him to prison.

At the request of the St. James elders, Hayes ordered Irvin to stay away from the church, “except from 10 to 11 a.m. on Sundays.”
