Man arrested, charged with stealing from church

| November 1, 2009

Spartanburg Public Safety officers arrested a burglary suspect inside Southside Baptist Church Saturday.

Ricky Turley, 55, was arrested without incident and charged with second-degree burglary.

Southside Baptist Church Pastor David Blanton was at the church preparing to distribute candy for Trunk or Treat — an event that was scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday in celebration of Halloween — when he noticed church offices in disarray and heard a noise.

Police responded and searched the building. According to the incident report, they found Turley kneeling "face down in a prayer stance." The report states Turley was intoxicated.

Blanton said Turley was not a member, but the church has tried to help him put his life back together after his release from prison about 18 months ago. Blanton said church members felt hurt by the break-in, but they pledged to "keep doing what we're supposed to be doing."

"I just told someone, 'Jesus was betrayed, so why should we be surprised?' " Blanton said. "We're still going to love the community and reach out with our ministry."

Two windows were broken and offices were ransacked, but nothing was taken. The damages were repaired by Saturday night, but the burglary forced the cancellation of the event.

Blanton said church members handed out candy to kids who had come to the church anticipating the event, and he took leftover candy to another neighborhood for distribution.

He said the burglary will not alter today's church services.
