| August 16, 2010

Atlanta police Sunday night arrested a suspected burglar on the roof of a Whitehall Street church that has been targeted numerous times by copper thieves.

Atlanta police spokesman Otis Redmond told the AJC that Donald Mitchell, 39, was arrested after someone called 911 to report a suspicious person at the church.

Mitchell was charged with burglary and possession of tools to commit a crime, Redmond said.

Pastor Robert Reed told Channel 2 Action News that the Pleasant Word Christian Center had already been broken into twice over the weekend before the man was caught Sunday night.

Reed told Channel 2 that the church has been burglarized a total of 17 times, with thieves taking 10 air conditioning units. He said the thieves also ripped out an alarm system and broke out windows.

Police have not said whether Mitchell is suspected in any of the previous crimes at the church.
