Man Burglarizes Synagogue, Tries On Rabbi’s Clothes

| February 13, 2010

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. — Authorities are trying to identify a man who broke into a Deerfield Beach synagogue, wandered around inside for two hours, ransacked offices, stacked computers and silverware to steal and even tried on the rabbi's clothes.

Broward Sheriff's Office detectives said the man didn't take much more than liquor and other drinks from Temple Beth Israel during the overnight burglary last month.

Detectives are hoping someone recognizes the shirtless burglar whose protracted escapade was captured on surveillance video.

The burglar can be seen on the video with a table cloth on his head walking leisurely through the kitchen, grabbing a hand cart and stacking trays of silverware. He ransacked two offices, rummaged through drawers and ripped computer equipment out of the wall.

For a moment on the video, he is seen wearing a jacket from the rabbi's office. Later in the video, the cloth falls and his face becomes visible.

When he noticed the surveillance cameras, he ripped them from the walls. He left the computers and silverware behind and got away with a few bottles of liquor and some non-alcoholic beverages.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office.
