Man charged in copper thefts at six churches

| February 26, 2012

When Susan Browning arrived for work at Moon’s Grove Baptist Church in Danielsville on Wednesday, she smelled gas, and utility workers quickly found that a thief had removed the copper tubing from under the church.

Most of the fuel in the recently filled tank had spilled. Browning missed two days of work in the office while the damage was repaired, she said.

On Thursday, Madison County Sheriff’s investigators arrested 28-year-old Michael Allen Harbert and charged him with the crime at Moon’s Grove along with copper thefts at five other churches in the county and six homes.

“There’s no telling how many more charges he’ll wind up with,” Madison County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Shawn Burns said Friday.
