Man charged with threatening to firebomb church

SANTA ANA – An 18-year-old Santa Ana man is facing arson charges after police say he threatened to firebomb a church with a Molotov cocktail.

Jose Alberto Neri on Tuesday pleaded not guilty to felony charges of attempted arson, possession of a destructive device in a public place and possession of flammable materials, as well as misdemeanor charges of having a switchblade knife, being under the influence of a controlled substance and possessing drug paraphernalia, according to Orange County Superior Court records.

Officers responded to reports of a suspected gang member threatening to shoot someone, possibly a rival gang member, at a church in the 500 block of South Van Ness Avenue about 9 p.m. Sunday, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
