Man indicted in West Chicago church theft

A former deacon and bookkeeper of a West Chicago church is accused of stealing more than $300,000.

George Valdez, 58, of the 800 block of Gates Street, was indicted on theft charges on suspicion he stole the money between Sept 2006 through September 2009 from St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was fired after the theft allegations were uncovered in September.

Prosecutors allege Valdez spent the money on tickets to attend White Sox and Bears games, hotel rooms, and for other unauthorized personal uses.

The grand jury handed up the 30-count indictment Tuesday. It alleges theft over $100,000, continuing financial crimes enterprise, fraudulent schemes/wire fraud.

Valdez is expected to turn himself in later today and appear tomorrow in bond court. He does not have a criminal history.
