DALLAS – A Dallas security guard was fatally shot when a bank robbery suspect was able to grab his gun during a scuffle late Wednesday morning.

The guard, identified by police as Lionel Newell, 55, was transported to a nearby hospital where he died.

One witness on the scene in the 3500 block of South Lancaster was about to enter the Bank of America to do business and described what happened.

"I heard like four shots," said Mario Alonzo. "I saw him running out, and that's when the suspect shot him two times."

The alleged robbery occurred just before 10:30 a.m. Police said the suspect entered the teller's area of Bank of America and demanded money.

That's when the security guard at the bank intervened, getting into a scuffle that ended with the suspect getting a hold of Newell's gun and shooting him with it.

"I hate that happened to him, because he didn't deserve that," said bank customer Mark Kennedy. "He was part of the community and loved his job."

The suspect fled the scene, running to Holy Trinity Church of God and Christ on Overton Street, which is a block away from the bank. John Grill, an air conditioner repair man, and senior pastor T.T. Terry were both at the church, both allegedly became victims of an attempted robbery.
