Man Sentenced for Stabbing Girlfriend Outside Grand Island Church

| September 29, 2013

A 41-year-old Grand Island man will spend 30-40 years in jail for stabbing his estranged girlfriend at least 20 times outside a church.

Hall County Attorney Mark Young says that on May 17, Aslin Nabarro had been drinking since 3 a.m. Young says Nabarro was convinced that his girlfriend, Mirna Medina-Colocho, 33, was cheating on him. Just before noon that day, Nabarro confronted Medina-Colocho in the parking lot of St. Mary's Cathedral and stabbed her in the torso and head repeatedly. Nabarro cut his own throat, then tried to run away, but collapsed in a nearby alley where police found him.

Young called Nabarro's actions a "vicious attack in broad daylight" and asked Judge Teresa Luther for a sentence of 40-50 years. Officials with the church said during the incident no children at the daycare across the St. Mary's parking lot were ever in danger, but Young referenced their nearby presence during his sentencing arguments.
