Man shot at Hollywood church is mentally ill, mother says

| March 7, 2011

FORT LAUDERDALE – The mother of the man who was shot by police during an incident last month at a Hollywood church said her son is mentally ill and she is grateful no one else was harmed.

Apparently recovered, Jonathan Shea, 24, appeared in bond court Monday, nearly two weeks after the church shooting sent him to the hospital with a bullet wound to his chest. Authorities said he chased a custodian with a knife.

Shea is charged with committing or attempting a felony that could cause death, armed burglary, and aggravated assault on an officer. On Monday he was ordered held without bond.

"I don't believe mentally ill people should be in prison because they are not getting rehabilitated there," his mother Patricia McNally, of Zephyrhills, said in a phone interview Monday afternoon. "I am thankful nobody got hurt, except my son.",0,959622.story
