Man steals collection from Greenwich church

While police search for a man who brazenly snatched the collection after the 9 a.m. Mass Sunday at St. Catherine of Siena Church, the pastor of the Riverside church is asking his faithful to pray for the thief.

"I have asked my parishioners to pray for the person," Msgr. Alan F. Detscher said of the man, who police say stole the money from the church's sacristy. "If someone is sincere, we grant them forgiveness, but it does not mean they are absolved from the consequences of their actions."

The sacristry is the room, usually behind the altar, where the vestments, church furnishings and sacred vessels are kept, as well as the place where the clergy meet to prepare for church functions, according to The Catholic Encyclopedia.

"He came into the sacristy and gave the impression that he was waiting for one of the priests," Detscher said.
