Man steals thousands from Wyandotte church on Easter Sunday

| April 28, 2011

Easter Sunday is one of the most well-attended days of the year at many churches, and it also was the day a man decided to steal thousands of dollars from a Wyandotte church right after mass.

Police say the man entered Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church and asked to speak with the pastor. The man was directed to an area in the back of the church where the pastor was putting away items from mass, Wyandotte Police Chief Dan Grant said. The collection money was on a table in a bank bag.

"He never made it to the pastor," Grant said. "He just basically grabbed the bank bag and walked out."

Security inside buildings is something the Archdiocese of Detroit has been concerned about recently. For years, other churches in metro Detroit have taken precautions to avoid thefts, ministers said.|newswell|text|FRONTPAGE|s
