| July 27, 2010

Ramallah: A thief who stole the contents of a donation box from the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem underwent trial Tuesday.

The man, accused of stealing $50 (Dh183.60) from the box, afterwards ran to the nearest money exchange shop where he swapped the stolen dollars for shekels and immediately spent it. The owner of the money exchange shop testified against him.

The man was also accused of damaging a statue of the Virgin Mary in the church.

His arrest follows an investigation by local police who used footage taken from security cameras in the church as evidence of the man’s guilt.

The suspect confessed to the crime, but pleaded insanity and therefore not responsible for his actions. He was released but referred to Bethlehem insane asylum.
