Man, Young Son Charged With Parish Robbery

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — A 52-year-old Bridgewater man charged last month with breaking into 16 houses, at times while his 4-year-old daughter accompanied him, was arrested late Friday night on charges that he and his 11-year-old son broke into a church parish center to steal food, our news partner The Enterprise reported.

Michael Varano, of 24 Bolton Place is being held at the Plymouth House of Correction on $5,000 cash bail on charges that he broke into the St. Thomas Aquinas parish center on Center Street.

Police said a witness saw a man and a boy with flashlights going through cabinets around 8:45 p.m. Officers responded and surrounded the building before they emerged from a rear door and threw their flashlights into a nearby cemetery.

Police Lt. Tom Schlatz said they were carrying food when they were arrested.
