Masked Man Steals Church Bingo Money

| September 26, 2010

A masked man attacks a senior citizen at a Clermont County church, robbing him of nearly $2000 of the church's bingo money. Police say the thief waited in a dark parking lot after Sunday's bingo night at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church on Buckwheat Road in Miami Township.

Robert Brookens says the man had a can of pepper spray. "You're totally startled. It's just like opening your door and someone punches you immediately."

The mugger knocked Brookens to the ground, hurting his back, wrist, shoulder and head, and sprayed his face with the pepper spray. Brookens says it was so bad, he had a hard time calling 911. He's been the bingo chair at the church for 30 years. He's now leaning on his church family to get past this attack. "I believe they feel invaded the same way I did but they did come to my comfort. They rallied behind me. We're all one knit family and we look out for each other."

Police helped the church come up with a new security plan to make sure this doesn't happen again.

The suspect is described as a white man in his 20's, standing about five feet 11 inches tall, weighing roughly 165 pounds. If you know anything about this crime, call Crimestoppers at 352-3040. You could get cash for you anonymous tip.
