Member charged with Toombs Co. church arson

TOOMBS CO., GA (WTOC) – A Toombs County man is charged with stealing from his own church and then setting the chapel on fire.

An empty lot now marks where Oasis Church once sat. WTOC reported last month on the blaze that left behind nothing but rubble and ashes. Investigators said someone set the sanctuary on fire.

Sheriff Alvie Kight said church member Tim Harden has been charged with burglary and arson. He remains in jail, awaiting a bond hearing.

"Most of the time, when you have an arson like that, it is somebody on the inside. We couldn't figure on somebody just coming in and burning a church," Kight said.

He said the case took a turn when church leaders reported missing musical instruments that were supposed to be in the building and would have been destroyed.
