Mexico violence curtails Dallas-area churches’ mission trips

For Rita Thomas, nothing beats working in the hot sun in Juárez, Mexico, helping to build cinderblock homes for people used to living in dirt-floor shacks.

"My heart is full when I'm there," said Thomas, who first went to Juárez 5 ½ years ago with a team from Suncreek United Methodist Church of Allen, and has been back nearly 30 times. "I'm at peace."

But while Thomas, 48, continues to make such mission trips, she's seeing a lot fewer U.S. church vans rambling around Juárez.
