Michael Jacques, Springfield Macedonia Church arson defendant, denies racial motive in tape played at trial

SPRINGFIELD – In his taped confession, church arson suspect Michael F. Jacques wanted to make one thing clear:

He is not a racist.

His friends might be racists, and he joined them in burning down a predominately black church six hours after Barack Obama’s election as the nation’s first black president.

But that was bad judgment, not bigotry.

“I don’t have a problem with black people,” the 26-year old former auto body shop employee declared on a videotape played Friday at his civil rights arson trial.
