Missionary and son safe after kidnapping

| November 7, 2010

Jim Scudder, a missionary in Kenya supported by the Pleasant Valley Church of Christ in Little Rock, Ark., and his son, John, are safe after a kidnapping ordeal in the East African nation’s capital, Nairobi.

“Details are very sketchy at present,” said Roger Pritchett, missions minister for the Pleasant Valley church. Scudder and his son were abducted early on Nov. 3 and were reported as safe about 2:30 a.m. (Kenya time) Nov. 4 (5:30 p.m. Nov. 3 in Arkansas).

We will update details as they become available.

Jim Scudder has worked in Kenya since the 1970s, Pritchett said. His first wife died in childbirth, and he remarried Grace, a native Kenyan. The couple and their three children work among the Kikuyu people in Nyeri, a city in central Kenya. Pleasant Valley has supported the work since 1991.

“There are approximately 35 churches, and 1,000 Christians among the Churches of Christ in Kikuyu land,” Pritchett said.
